A Collin County jury has put a former Prosper youth softball coach away for the rest of his prime. Michael Angel Garcia, 37, was sentenced to 50 years in prison without the possibility of parole for continuous sexual abuse of a child, District Attorney Greg Willis announced Thursday.
The key facts:
- Garcia was convicted of continuous sexual assault of a child under 14 and sexual assault of a child.
- Judge Richard Davis handed down 50 years on the continuous abuse count and 20 years on the sexual assault count. The sentences run concurrently.
- Prosecutors said Garcia used his position as a longtime softball coach to gain ongoing access to the victim, abusing her from age 6 until she was 14.
- The case surfaced Aug. 25, 2025, when the girl's family and medical personnel contacted law enforcement. DNA testing later tied Garcia to the case.
- The victim described the abuse during a forensic interview at the Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County.
- Prosper Police Detective Seth Cockerham served a search warrant at Garcia's home, where investigators recovered DNA evidence backing up the victim's account. Evidence from Garcia's phone was also recovered.
- Garcia was arrested in Hillsboro, Texas, while trying to flee to Mexico.
The context: Texas law requires that sentences for continuous sexual abuse of a child be served without parole eligibility, which is why the 50-year term is a flat sentence.
In his statement, Willis said Garcia exploited a position of trust over a child for years and that people who do so will be held accountable.
