Grand Rapids Catholic Central went from No. 1 seed to season over in a single phone call. The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) pulled the Cougars from the Division 5 playoffs on Thursday, a little over 24 hours before their opening-round game, after ruling they used an ineligible player in the first seven games of the regular season.
- The ruling: The MHSAA withdrew Catholic Central from the 11-Player Division 5 playoffs over the ineligible player, who was a transfer, according to Brobible.
- The math: The Cougars went 6-1 in games that player appeared in. All six wins became forfeits, dropping the team's record from 7-2 to 1-8, which is not a playoff résumé.
- The stakes: Catholic Central was the No. 1 seed, went undefeated in league play, and was set to host Comstock Park on Friday. The program has won six titles in the last 11 years.
- The appeal: The school plans to appeal, but the appeal won't put the team back in this year's postseason.
How it got here
According to the school's statement, as reported by Brobible, the player transferred in January. A month later, his previous school claimed the move was athletically motivated. The MHSAA reviewed it and found no evidence to support the claim. The player sat out during the review and was cleared in August.
Then came mid-October. Catholic Central says it was notified of new information about the family's move, which the MHSAA determined violated its policy. The player was pulled again and missed the final two games of the season. The school says it cooperated throughout and believes the playoff ban isn't justified, and its statement puts some of the blame on the MHSAA.
Why it matters
Forfeits are one thing. Losing a postseason a day before kickoff is another. Players who followed the rules all season and had no say in the transfer's paperwork are the ones watching the bracket move on without them. The MHSAA hasn't been quoted in the Brobible report beyond its ruling, so the full story will likely come out in the appeal.
For now, the Cougars are done, Comstock Park's path just got easier, and every athletic director in the state is double-checking their transfer files tonight.
