A Pasadena, Maryland woman who served as treasurer of a youth sports club has pleaded guilty to taking more than $238,000 from the volunteer organization. That's a lot of orange slices and tournament entry fees.
According to the Anne Arundel, MD Patch, Kelley Ann Haley, 46, also pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return.
The key facts:
- The amount: Haley admitted to stealing $238,452 from the Pasadena Buccaneers Athletic Club, per a Thursday release from the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.
- The timeline: The theft ran five years, from 2019 to 2024, while she was the club's treasurer.
- The method: The Anne Arundel County Police Department found that Haley made ATM withdrawals using the club's debit cards.
- The tax charge: She left the money off her income tax return, which let her avoid $4,625.69 in taxes. She is required to pay that amount to the state.
- The plea: Guilty pleas in both cases were entered Oct. 30.
- The sentencing: Both cases are set for sentencing Dec. 17.
The number moved around
Officials previously put the total at more than $242,500. The plea lists the figure at $238,452, which is the number tied to the guilty plea.
Why it matters
Youth clubs run on volunteers, and the treasurer is often whoever raised a hand first. That makes this a useful case study for any board or parent group that handles registration fees, sponsorship money, and concession cash. The reported method here was routine debit card withdrawals over five seasons.
The Pasadena Buccaneers Athletic Club is the organization named in the attorney general's release. Sentencing is Dec. 17.
